Offshore Gambling Sites Continue to Offer Betting Services to US Customers
/ 1. May 2006
While the US government still considers gambling on the internet in any form to be illegal, online companies providing offshore gambling are on the increase, with a wide range of services available to American customers.

US bettors looking for offshore gambling have an impressive array of websites to choose from, and a host of easy payment options for transferring funds to the offshore gambling sites. Companies such as Neteller and FirePay are eWallet solutions that offer international cash transfers to be processed on line from US customers to offshore gambling companies.

While there is a push within US legislative bodies to pass further laws outlawing internet betting and to restrict availability to offshore gambling companies in the US, these bills have all been blocked in the early stages of process, with offshore gambling industry insiders confident that the new anti-online gaming bills will not pass.

Even if the new laws would come into force, there is little the US government can do to stop the rapidly increasing popularity of the offshore gambling companies. This has led to a strong push from within the US to follow the example set by countries such as the UK in legalizing and heavily regulating the internet betting industry. Estimates show that the US government is losing millions of dollars every year in potential tax revenue from internet gambling, funds which are currently being channelled out of the country to offshore gambling companies.

Many of these offshore gambling companies are based in countries such as the UK and Antigua, where local laws regulate the operation of internet gambling sites and reap large tax revenues from the industry.

Pro-online gambling lobbyists have suggested that the US government would be wise to regulate the industry and focus it's energies on making a tightly-controlled online gambling industry with legislation to ensure strong safeguards against problem gambling, under-age gambling, fairness and consumer safety, rather than trying to legislate on its citizens' morals.

Meanwhile internet betting companies continue to provide offshore gambling websites to US customers, who account for more than half of the worldwide online gamblers today, in a multi-billion dollar industry.
